About Kinara

Kinara for Youth Evolution is a youth-led, Tanzanian Non-Governmental Organization committed to empowering young people—especially women and vulnerable groups—through education, health, economic opportunity, and civic action. Established as a Community-Based Organization in 2014 and officially registered as an NGO in 2018, Kinara is headquartered in Morogoro and works across urban and rural areas of the region.

We engage youth in hands-on learning, mentoring, entrepreneurship, and leadership development. From reducing teenage pregnancies through peer-led sexual health education, to equipping young mothers with skills in tailoring, cosmetology and culinary arts, our programs are designed to foster self-reliance, dignity, and opportunity.

Our teams include program officers, trainers, mentors, community volunteers, and youth leaders—working side-by-side with schools, local governments, and civil society. Every activity is rooted in participatory approaches and shaped by the voices of the communities we serve.

We are guided by a clear mission and theory of change, built on the belief that healthy, skilled, and confident youth are key to sustainable community development. Since our founding, Kinara has reached over 5,000 young people through education support, job training, mentoring, and advocacy.

Kinara is not only a service provider—it is a growing movement of young changemakers, working to create a more equitable and resilient Morogoro, one initiative at a time.

Our Story

Kinara’s roots run deep in the Morogoro community. Our founding in 2013 was prompted by a larger international organization pulling its programming from the community. Local youth who were enthusiastically participating wanted to continue the educational and girls’ empowerment programming that was being offered as it helped them gain practical employment skills and gave them a safe space to gather and make their voices heard.

In the weeks to follow, the community came together and realized that people needed more than employable skills. They expressed frustration about the lack of jobs for young people, persistent gender discrimination, and a lack of knowledge about reproductive health. The most popular existing program was a Girls Club to educate girls on sexual health and topics like gender equality. Girls Club planted the seeds for Kinara and a legacy of young people being champions of change in Morogoro.

Today our work continues to focus on improving the lives and livelihoods of the people of Morogoro, and in particular the lives of youth under 35 years old. We believe that by giving youth ownership of local social change projects, they can make a difference in their community while getting the tools and building the relationships they need to improve their lives and overcome any challenges they face on the way to being productive members of society.

Our Strategic Compass

Our Mission

Empowering the next generation with health knowledge, gender-fair mind-sets and income-generating skills—building thriving youth and stronger communities across Morogoro, Tanzania.

Our Vision

A generation of healthy, empowered young people driving inclusive development across Morogoro.

Our Theory of Change

Our fundamental theory of change is that by giving youth ownership of local social change projects, they make a difference in their community while getting the tools and building the relationships they need to improve their lives and overcome any challenges they face on the way to being productive members of society.

Our Process

Our process begins with participatory assessments that surface the priorities of Morogoro’s youth and community stakeholders. Together we co-design programmes, pilot them on a small scale and refine the approach before full implementation. Throughout delivery we pair skills training with continuous mentoring, while a rigorous monitoring-and-evaluation framework tracks progress and feeds learning back into programme design. Proven solutions are then scaled to new wards across Morogoro, ensuring each expansion is grounded in local insight and measurable impact.
