Across Morogoro Municipality, Morogoro District, and Kilosa, Kinara and Women Fund Tanzania Trust team up to empower adolescents and youth to make healthy,-informed choices about their futures. The Big Sisters and Big Brothers project pairs trained community members with vulnerable students, creating a strong, multi-layered support network that helps reduce teenage pregnancy and foster a culture of understanding and responsibility.
The initiative combines peer mentoring with education sessions, media campaigns, community meetings and creative content to reach both young people and their families. Each Big Brother, Big Sister and Strength of Mother is trained in communication, facilitation, and leadership, allowing them to guide their younger peers with confidence and compassion. The project also involves schools, local leaders and health service providers, strengthening the community’s collective ability to keep children in school and make healthy choices.
This approach is already delivering powerful results. The vast majority of participating students pass their SRHR exams, grow more vocal and engaged in their own futures, and show greater understanding of gender equality, consent and responsible relationships. The strong network of community advocates helps foster a supportive environment for these conversations, reflecting a shared commitment to the well-being of the community’s youth.
