In Morogoro Municipality, Swisscontact and Kinara join forces to open doors in the beauty industry for two groups who often struggle to find work—out-of-school youth and young mothers. By blending hands-on cosmetology training with business coaching, finance links and family support, the programme turns raw creativity into bankable skills and new careers.
Every participant begins with soft-skill workshops in customer care, business planning and basic bookkeeping, then dives into practical modules on hairdressing, barbering, make-up artistry, nail care and salon hygiene. Pop-up clinics, community fairs and practice sessions with peers give trainees the chance to serve real clients and build confidence long before graduation.
The timetable adapts to life realities: youth attend standard daytime classes, while young mothers train in split shifts so they can balance childcare. After classroom work, both cohorts move into month-long internships at established salons—refining technique, learning inventory routines and mastering the rhythm of daily client flow. Those ready to branch out on their own receive help securing affordable workspaces or launching mobile services that meet customers where they are.
Business groups formed during training register formally and tap the Youth Development Fund for start-up capital, while negotiated supply agreements keep product costs predictable. Graduates who prefer employment over self-employment step smoothly into salon jobs; others strike out as freelancers, buoyed by group saving schemes and growing client lists. Early evidence shows a strong uptake: many trainees start earning within weeks, pocketing anything from a few thousand to tens of thousands of shillings per assignment and circulating fresh income through their households and neighbourhoods.
By pairing market-ready beauty skills with wrap-around support—child-friendly schedules, finance links, supplier networks and ongoing mentorship—the Cosmetology & Beautification programme helps youth and young mothers move from economic uncertainty to vibrant entrepreneurship, colouring their communities with new talent, confidence and opportunity.
